Rocket Bomber

A New Start for Two Sites

filed under , 26 February 2011, 21:05 by

Just this past week, I launched a new book-oriented blog, which leaves me to wonder a bit about what to do with the old book-oriented blog—

—this one.

##

BookNom.net is different – first up is focus: BookNom is just for reviews. Books are the only topic and I’m doing my best to make it look both inviting and professional. While the basic framework is a blog [in fact, it uses the same CMS as RocketBomber] the concept & eventual execution are much more ‘site’ than ‘blog’ – if that distinction means anything to you. RocketBomber is a platform for me to post drunken rants to the internet, while BookNom.net is… not.

I’ve already opened up the BookNom concept & platform to 3 other contributors – maybe 4 [Lissa is working hard on the art for me — IT'S FANTASTIC, TELL HER THAT — but we still haven’t talked about her writing anything for the site] so from the very beginning, BookNom is not just my project.

In fact: click, read, and consider – Submission Guidelines : Style Guide : Reviewer Resources : Call for Contributors

And BookNom is much more an idea than a website: way back in June the idea for BookNom grew organically out of… me posting drunken rants to the internet

In fact, hell, we could sign the whole thing up as an Amazon affiliate, let them worry about procurement & shipping & margin, and just take our cut from the internet sale. I don’t need a warehouse and fulfillment protocols for millions of titles if I can get Amazon to do that for me — I’ll take the booksellers, thanks, the ones who know and love the product, and we’ll do just fine.

There is nothing stopping you from just taking this idea (and the links to handy resources I’ve already posted) and starting your own book-reviews-for-tips website. I Strongly Encourage You To Do So. Hell, if your version is better than mine, I’ll write for you and you can register the domain names and pay for hosting & web design & art and work part time as editor (I haven’t been an editor since college newspaper days, ah nostalgia, 17 years ago) and I’ll just take the points I get as an Amazon [and soon to be IndieBound!] affiliate and drink my beer and write my little missives to an uncaring internet.

##

I’m a Lazy Bastard.

No, it’s true. I spent 7 years (7½ – almost 8) at one of our nation’s finest educational institutions, treating a major research university like my own intellectual buffet. I changed my major almost annually; I studied physics, architecture, engineering; I took math classes as electives; I asked for (and got) permission to take graduate level courses as an undergrad. I squeezed Uni like a ripe fruit, and drank deep from the juice.

—and then spent five years in bars [as a consultant – getting paid, even; I’ve been spending decades in bars at this point] followed by my current employment as a bookseller. I like the bookstore, and working there gets me an employee discount.

Of Course I’m over qualified. That’s why they kept promoting me, year after year. But that wasn’t a bad thing: I’ve worked almost every job under the roof, and done every task you can think of: receiving, shelving, stock maintenance, and returns; stints in every specialty department – including music, DVDs, newstand, gift, bargain books, and most recently digital; the whole spectrum of retail management from hiring, training, evaluation, scheduling, Bookseller mentoring and development;

Not only have I spent the last ten years learning a bookstore up-down-and-sideways, I’ve spent my days off researching online book sales and publishing trends and drinking deep from the well, listening to Mimir’s murmurs and Delphic whispers.

Given my background, and education, I could be doing ‘important’ work. My thought at one point was to pursue a career in architectural acoustics, designing concert halls and other performance spaces. Instead, I ended up as a bookseller. My passions and inclinations weren’t amputated, however: As a bookseller, I’ve been analyzing the Big Box just as avidly as I tackled any academic subject while at university.

I’m a lazy bastard – I could have been an architect, or engineer, or physicist, or inventor. But that was work: I didn’t find my true calling until I was out of school for 4 years and took a part-time job as a bookseller.

##

BookNom.net is it’s own thing, and I hope that from humble origins it will grow into a modest site — I don’t need the payday from a sell-out, and the bigger deal it becomes the more work it will be. But a book-recommendation site that some thousands visit, enough to make the affiliate links pay out at least enough for beer money for the reviewers, a website that makes a top 1000 or top 100 list? That would be grand.

BookNom is the site I would have launched in 2004 (back in Jan. 2004 when I wrote my first blog post) if I had understood the internet at that point, or more to the point had understood what it was I could contribute.

RocketBomber is the site that I, as a 37-year-old blogger with the odd hobbies and a bookselling job and too much beer and a 7 year blogging history — well, this is site I ended up with. RocketBomber may take a decided turn to the personal – relieved of the burden of being my ‘professional’ blog, I can share more insights without caring who the audience is, or what the reception to my posts will be.

Yes, I’ll still post online rankings and analysis of industry numbers. I’ll still post columns like rethinking the box. I’ll still post the free-form thought pieces. (& I do not doubt some columns will grow organically from the book-review-mission-statement of BookNom.net as well)

But I think I’ll post more often to RocketBomber, now that the onus of posting for the ‘permanent record’ is off. No doubt, some of you will consider this to be an improvement; the rest will remove the link, unfollow the RSS feed, and set up a filter to automatically delete me.

From this point forward: I will post.

Books Are Not Retail

filed under , 18 February 2011, 18:19 by

Retail pays the rent, but isn’t what draws people into the store. For every single diehard reader that still buys books, there are

  • 2 homeless people. I’ve been calling them ‘urban campers’
  • 3 assholes coming in to use their cell phone, *noisily*, because ironically the bookstore is a quiet place where they can hear their conversation. (and so can everyone else… turn down the volume a tad; what, are you deaf?)
  • 4 recent graduates reading GMAT/LSAT/GRE/MCAT study guides, and books on financial aid.
  • 5 job-seekers looking at the resume books and career guides
  • 6 students coming to read the graphic design, fashion, architecture, and art books, and magazines, and maybe a comic book or three — actually, well, this is particular to my store, since SCAD Atlanta is just down the street.
  • 7 folks meeting — for dates, for tutoring, for interviews, for business, for the book clubs (we host 3)
  • 8 people coming in just for coffee
  • 9 people just ‘killing time’
  • 10 folks whose first, last, and only question is, “Where is the restroom?”

##

In the wake of the latest Borders developments, this is as good a time as any to reconsider the bookstore.

[I do this all the time but this is just one lonely blog with scant dozens of readers]

Books aren’t retail. — oh sure, many different retailers sell books: Wal-mart, Target, Costco, supermarkets, drugstores, internet, sidewalk vendors and even the local library (once a year)

But Bookstores aren’t retail: bookstores are social spaces, places to meet, places to spend time with the kids or with friends.

It’s easy to point out the “errors” bookstores make, in regards to the “business” — but do *you* really want your bookstore run as a business? No, honestly.

How do you use (and abuse) your local bookstore?

Extended aside: No, not the local independent, as I’m sure you love your local and buy items from them on occasion [even though the internet is cheaper] because you love them and *heart* them and they genuinely deserve it. They really do. Indy booksellers are pillars of the community and saints and everything and anything we can do to support them isn’t charity — we’re just looking out for ourselves, really, because what would we do without them?

No, not the cute shop in the hard-to-find building in the quaint shopping district just off of downtown — you know, with trees along the sidewalks and open air cafés and boutiques with precious dresses (all 3 sizes too small) and the record store that still sells vinyl and the art theatre no one goes to and the biker bar on the corner that you take your friends to on a Tuesday [“this is so authentic”] but are afraid to go to after 8pm on a Saturday night. —no, not this book shop.

Be honest: how do you treat your bookstore? The big box by the mall. The major chain. You Love the local indy and visit at least six times a year — but every freakin’ Sunday you’re at my store and you read a foot-tall stack of magazines and the sunday papers (the local and the New York Times) and leave a mess and a coffee cup and the crumbs and maybe even a used tissue.

I mean, it’s just a chain bookstore, right? They expect it. No Big Thing. They’re a major chain, nation-wide — if I don’t buy more than a $2 cup of coffee and maybe, maybe a donut it’s not like they’re going to be hurt by that — if they didn’t want me to read the magazines for free, why do they have the tables and comfy chairs and the low-key music and the shelves full of magazines? It’s as much a lounge as a bookstore anyway; I mean, I do buy something every now and then, right? This is how the book business works.

##

Point 1: Can you name one, one, other retailer that would put up with this crap? You folks plop down in the aisle, take off your shoes, read items in full (meaning you have no need to actually buy them) while also physically damaging the merchandise to the point where I can’t sell it to anyone else.

Point 2: Borders declared bankruptcy. Investors, journalists, bloggers, and pundits are still debating whether this means Borders is going out of business. Or whether “book retail” is even viable in an age of internet sales sites and direct digital downloads.

##

Borders made mistakes. Obviously. But in any other retail field, Borders’ “mistakes” are not only not obviously wrong, they are standard operating procedures and might even be good ideas: Expand nationally, and internationally. Serve multiple markets, from malls to downtown to suburban retail centers to airports to small town squares.

No supermarket chain is getting flack for ceding online sales of groceries to Webvan — but the pre-2008 Amazon/Borders arrangement is Cause One on many lists [including mine] of Why Borders Failed.

The folks who ran Borders (and there were a lot of them; their org chart has been a revolving door for years) can not be faulted: they thought Borders was a retailer. Their long experience at other retailers should have been all they needed to walk in a run a major nationwide chain, so long as it’s all still retail.

I find it interesting that business journalists can simultaneously condemn Borders’ management for not knowing books, for not being ‘booksellers’ while never explaining to their readers — or admitting to themselves — just what it is that makes the book business different.

Books Are Not Retail.

Big Box Bookstores are social spaces, have been since 1992 or so, and it is at least as important — more important — to consider community, demographics, sociology, psychology, and the whole grand tradition of books and Civilization Itself, as to rely on old models of retail and business.

Borders’ bankruptcy is not a failure of the business. Borders was run as a business, quite professionally, and using standard retail models.

The eventual collapse of Borders came because those in control of Borders forgot (or failed to ever realize) that Borders sells books.

And bookselling *is not* retail.

One more year, one more gnarly mess of online sales data and another brave attempt to de-tangle it.

filed under , 13 February 2011, 21:26 by

So, having finally caught up [in part] to the massive data backlog that is my daily blogging life, I hit a milestone:

Week ending 26 December, 2010.

I was six (almost seven) weeks late, but being late didn’t really matter. Given the tyranny of calendars and the inevitable retrospectives they engender (related to our collective love as a species for big round numbers) my reaching the end of a calendar year meant, of course, that I should dump everything in a bucket (statistically speaking) and immediately dish up a Top 10. We love numbered lists, especially Top 10 lists (even more than we love Big Round Numbers). A list is order imposed on the entropic universe, and the absolute certainty provided by a “Number One” makes buying decisions clear, and supports the illusion that our critical discernment (or personal taste) is, in fact, correct.

(Unless the Number One is obviously ‘wrong’, in which case we immediately tear down the authority or methodology that picked ‘wrong’.)

Anyway, I took all the data from my 2010 manga sales rankings, compiled it, and then looked at the top 10. And top 50. And top 3000 — and the numbers without context were basically meaningless to me.

At the end of the year, it didn’t matter so much that Ecchi Omnimanga Robot vol 8 outsold Mystical Shoujo Romance Kingdom vol 3 by 30% or 40% or whatever — both individual volumes sold well, and more important to me was how each series performed (all volumes inclusive) or whether the books were selling enough — enough to support the production of the series, enough to keep the imprint alive, enough to encourage editors and publishers to license more series, and to re-license titles so they remain in print. Also, a year-end tally says nothing about when a title sold 500 units, just that it did. What was the market like when the books sold? Was there an anime out in Japan, or in the US? What other books sold that week, that month?

This is why I like the weekly grind [yes, I like it — when I’m posting on time] because it’s a snapshot of a week, a much easier time period to wrap one’s brain around. And at least for my charts (I won’t mention again how useless the NYT manga bestsellers are) I also do series rankings, I stretch into a top 100 and 500 to show how other individual volumes in the same series are performing, and I attempt to provide depth of analysis — well, I haven’t had time but the data is there and I post *long* lists so anyone with the ability to save a webpage or copy-paste the text could do the same.

A single 2010 list, no matter how long, flattens all of that data out just to pick a Number One. But what do we know after such a list posts, that we didn’t already know or guess before? Does knowing the Top 10 of 2010 change the sales numbers? Popular books become more popular? Imprints that were closed or companies that went out of business suddenly re-open because, hey, our top book of last year was #7 on some sales ranking list? Hey, I didn’t know that; why the hell did we close if we had a Top 10 Title?!

A top 10 means nothing; “Number One” is nice, but does not reveal anything about the industry, or about the books.

It was Naruto vol 48 if you care that much.

This isn’t why I invest dozens of hours a month.

##

More important than Number One is how the book got there; what is the sales history? Even better, is the surprise at #17, and how a little known niche book manages to grow over a couple of releases into a solid midlist title — all the volumes in the top 25 even if (especially if) no single book ever does crack the top 10.

As was pointed out to me, though, the weekly charts — especially the top 10 — barely change from week to week.

Think of it as a satellite map: zoom in too close, and you can see your neighbor’s pool [“hey, I didn’t know they had a pool!”] even though you can’t see the nearest major intersection — the corner just outside your neighborhood — but zoom out too far and all you see is a splotch. Maybe it’s a splotch you recognise, because it’s a familiar shape seen on other older maps, but it doesn’t tell you how to get to the new burger joint just reviewed in the local alt-weekly.

Nothing will replace the weekly manga bestseller charts, and I hope to catch up soon and resume posting those in a timely manner. But a lump-it-all year-end chart is the same as a city-satellite-splotch. There is a role, and a need, for something in between.

After spending a couple of late nights with this problem, and with all that 2010 data, I came up with what I think is a solution. The new chart is a significant chunk, a satisfying chunk, and averages out some of the spikes and anomolies, but is not so big that all detail and grain in the rankings is lost. My new chart will slot into the calendar with which we’re all familiar, but isn’t a year-end [dismissive] summary just for the sake of posting something at year end.

It’s a new cycle, and a new commitment. I posted the first two of these charts yesterday.

2010 Q3 Summer Cumulative Manga Bestseller Chart
2010 Q4 Autumn Cumulative Manga Bestseller Chart

Each quarterly chart covers 15 weeks, and corresponds to the season it’s named after. So, for example, the Autumn chart will be the 15 weeks leading up to (roughly) December 22. You’ll note that 15 weeks is just a bit too long for a quarter though (it’s almost four months) so there is some overlap – which has the handy side effect that the Autumn chart will always include one extra week in December – taking us up to and through the week of Christmas.

Yes, I put some thought into this.

So, every 13 weeks I’ll post a quarterly chart as an extension of the work I’m already doing on the weekly charts. I apologize in advance that some of these bestseller charts will post late, but that’s because I have to work a 40-hr-a-week job to pay the bills and no one is paying me [*HINT, HINT*] to collect the data, compile the rankings, and post the reports. So you have to take what you get.

Looking at the two quarterly reports generated so far, I think I’m onto something with this. Among other things, consider the two imprint reports:

[from the 2010 Q4 Autumn report]

Top Imprints
Number of titles ranking in the Top 500:

Viz Shonen Jump 101
Tokyopop 56
Viz Shojo Beat 53
Yen Press 47
Viz Shonen Jump Advanced 33
Vizkids 31
Del Rey 30
HC/Tokyopop 18
Viz 15
Dark Horse 14

[more]

The Backlist
Number of titles ranking in the full 2500:

Tokyopop 372
Viz Shonen Jump 296
Viz Shojo Beat 222
Del Rey 202
Viz 188
Yen Press 185
Dark Horse 126
Viz Shonen Jump Advanced 124
Viz Shonen Sunday 99
Viz Signature 99

[more]

— I post a ‘publisher’s scorecard’ as part of each weekly chart: number of books from each imprint that place in the top 500; but look at the same sort of list pulled from the top 2500 titles from the quarterly chart: Suddenly, Tokyopop is number one. Viz Signature & Shonen Sunday jump into the top 10, while Vizkids & the HarperCollins/Tokyopop OEL manga slip away. Del Rey, on the strength of its backlist, jumps ahead of relative newcomer Yen Press — even in a quarter where Del Rey (recently hobbled by the introduction of Kodansha Comics) had virtually no new releases compared to the dozens of new titles, monthly, from Yen.

Let’s look at the series ranking:

Top 100 Series:

1. ↔0 (1) : Naruto – Viz Shonen Jump [13,184.0] ::
2. ↑1 (3) : Maximum Ride – Yen Press [11,388.7] ::
3. ↑1 (4) : Bleach – Viz Shonen Jump [9,250.4] ::
4. ↑3 (7) : Alice in the Country of Hearts – Tokyopop [9,066.0] ::
5. ↓-3 (2) : Vampire Knight – Viz Shojo Beat [8,943.7] ::
6. ↑6 (12) : Black Butler – Yen Press [8,069.0] ::
7. ↓-1 (6) : Black Bird – Viz Shojo Beat [7,653.8] ::
8. ↑28 (36) : Hetalia Axis Powers – Tokyopop [7,098.5] ::
9. ↓-1 (8) : Warriors – HC/Tokyopop [6,783.4] ::
10. ↓-5 (5) : Negima! – Del Rey [6,568.8] ::

[more]

Here we can see not only that Black Butler & Hetalia became Big Deals during the Autumn, but also the gains made since Summer: from #12 to #6 for Black Butler, from out of nowhere (gaining on 28 other series) for the new Hetalia Axis Powers.

##

For me, it’s not about the top 10: it’s about the midlist, and the backlist, and the context. This is why I spend so much time acquiring the data and manually entering it into my spreadsheets, and why I have always posted not just more than a top 10, but the sources and my methods. (not that I’m going to bag on the NYT for how useless their top 10 manga charts are. again. I also won’t mention that the New York Times bestsellers are a fairly amateur setup that can be — and has been — gamed.)

At some point, maybe 6 months from now or so, I will in fact post the 2010 chart (and I’ve also realized I’ve data from 2009 that was never compiled into a year-end chart) much as I’ve done for 2007 and 2008 — but that’s for the sake of the historical record, and not so much for daily blog posts or book retailers who’d like know what to order next month.

I like the new chart, and feel it’ll be a nice addition to the weekly charts. I also think I might post some interstitial charts (6.5 or 7 weeks into the quarter) just so we can identify the trends without having to wait a full three months. These quarterly rankings make more sense to me than a large globulous full-year chart.

Your comments are welcome; if you’ve looked at the two quarterly charts previously posted and had questions or wanted clarifications, please ask.

Yes, all the links are broken.

On June 1, 2015 (after 6 years and 11 months) I needed to relaunch/restart this blog, or at least rekindle my interest in maintaining and updating it.

Rather than delete and discard the whole thing, I instead moved the blog -- database, cms, files, archives, and all -- to this subdomain. When you encounter broken links (and you will encounter broken links) just change the URL in the address bar from www.rocketbomber.com to archive.rocketbomber.com.

I know this is inconvenient, and for that I apologise. In addition to breaking tens of thousands of links, this also adversely affects the blog visibility on search engines -- but that, I'm willing to live with. Between the Wayback Machine at Archive.org and my own half-hearted preservation efforts (which you are currently reading) I feel nothing has been lost, though you may have to dig a bit harder for it.

As always, thank you for reading. Writing version 1.0 of Rocket Bomber was a blast. For those that would like to follow me on the 2.0 - I'll see you back on the main site.
