Subtitle: A short trip through Wikipedia to investigate the many, many ways we have attempted to communicate with each other, from cave painting to ebooks.

Anyone can say just about anything about the ebooks, and make it stick, and get retweets and link backs in the echo chamber because no one does their homework.

“Oooo: ebooks are new and flash and a Game Changer™! Books will never be the same again!”

[*pfsh*]. please.

I personally think of ebooks as more of an evolutionary, transitional format, as opposed to be a total game changer and its own Whole New Thing — particularly when ebooks are compared to web pages. [psst: ebooks are nothing but gimped, DRM crippled web pages]

Go back. Read a bit; Wikipedia has its own flaws and problems, but most of the articles linked above are pretty good. Let the History of Communication soak in; try to readjust your world view — Books are not [just] physical commodities to be bought and sold: books are one way, one of many ways, we transmit culture to future generations. Obviously, I both enjoy and support the free-market-supported system we currently have, where books are bought and sold and creators get compensated for their work — but this was not the earliest model and is not guaranteed — indeed, creator compensation isn’t even guaranteed in the free-market-supported model, though more folks get paid (& more reliably) today than at any time in the past. Yes, even with digital piracy:

The biggest fear should not be getting pirated, but in being unknown, or forgotten. Piracy has been with us since the beginning; in fact ‘piracy’ was once the only distribution model. [that’s one of the points I made in this post]

Before you tell me ebooks are the “answer” I insist you do some research, and be sure you’re asking the right questions.

The Big Picture on Publishing, and a Primer on the Emerging Format War

filed under , 6 September 2010, 10:12 by

Alternate Title: Before you destroy a thing you should know just what it is you mean to destroy.

##

A lot of forecasts & assertions & spin & PR & words have been dropped all around this new thing, e-books, but to me it all smacks of pipe dreams and snake oil.

I’m a numbers guy, just give me the numbers.

…and it’s a whole lotta numbers: 60 months of data from Publishers.org, the website of the Association of American Publishers. — I’d list a link to each month of data but thankfully there’s already an index at the AAP site

Of course, it took a while to pull everything together into a spreadsheet, but hey, somebody had to do it.

##

So, let’s set a baseline first. Total book sales, by month, for the last 60 months. [July 2005 to June 2010.] For this calculation I’ve included college text-books but excluded the el-hi (elementary to high school) text book market.

Here it is kids: this is bookselling.

  • bookselling is seasonal. Everyone knows this, I guess, as all retail is seasonal. Some books are bought as gifts, in fact, though I think a lot of the December bump is folks buying gifts for themselves after mall trawls and selective skirmishes into discount retailers: a hot cup of cocoa and a little something to curl up with on a cold winter night. (maybe that’s just me)
  • textbooks are bookselling – and a big ol’ chunk of bookselling at that. Some observers (myself included) raised an eybrow at the B&N/B&N College merger – but just look at that graph: every August & September is like Christmas all over again, except for two months, and while not nearly as many units are sold, the ones that do sell are selling at text book prices. The college business is that big (just look at the graph) and maybe buying B&N College for a half billion was cheap at the price.
  • even at it’s worst — Feb, Mar, Apr each year — books sell in the hundreds of millions monthly. And sales of close to 1.5 billion each December doesn’t hurt either.

Obviously textbooks are a destabilising factor; let’s run the same chart without them:

Here we see something much more interesting. Returns of textbooks to publishers each March and October actual drag down total sales. That, and the peak for books isn’t December (that’s just kids gearing up for second semester) — the real season for book sales is Autumn, peaking each Sept-Oct, months before holiday retail.

Bet you didn’t count on that! Heck, I work retail (& I’m a bookseller) and we do gobs of business each December but it never occured to me (until I made that chart) how much of that isn’t books: calendars, greeting cards, gift wrap, board games; everything and anything but the books (though we sell books, too.)

I haven’t even hit my main points yet and I’m already learning something. Research is it’s own reward.

If you hadn’t already guessed, I’ll be slowly adding more and more lines to this graph just to illustrate what the book business is and where it’s going — slowly, to give your brain time to assimilate the info. Next line is e-books, and given where e-books currently stand, it’d be easy to use this as a punchline:

Even with double- and triple-digit growth year-to-year, ebooks are, well, just a footnote. So Far. I’ll get back to e- before the end of this post, and we’ll adjust the scale so we can more clearly see just how the e biz is doing for books. But given the scope of the rest of publishing, even without the text book market? just a blip.

##

Amazon recently reported that they sell more Kindle books than hardcovers. Woot. Yay. I find it interesting, however, that this news only comes out after the spring (which as we can see in graphs above is a seasonal low-point in book sales) and only compared to hardcover books sales… well, since I have those numbers, let’s analyze it. I’ll even give Amazon the benefit of the doubt, and combine adult and childrens hardcover into a single number

Amazon has at least 80% of the ebook business but only 13% of overall book sales [per my most recent analysis] so growth in the former combined with a seasonal- and recession-related drop in the latter makes for a good headline.

But what does it actually look like?

The “explosion” in Kindle sales didn’t seem to affect hardcover much. Indeed, Amazon sells a lot of books (2 billion dollars worth in 2009, by my count) but that still isn’t enough to move the needle: Publishing and bookselling seem to be doing fine, and doing their own thing, even after 15 years of Amazon (and 5 years as charted in detail above)

I think you can see the overall trends, so let me add the last two threads:

The “Trade” paperbacks [the purple line in the graph above] don’t follow the same trends as hardcover, and the “mass market” paperbacks [teal] seem immune, even to seasonal trends. Even at this scale, I think we can see e-books eating more into mass-market paperbacks (the closest format to e-books in price) than any other publishing trend.

Of course, we’re in a recession, so it’s hard to say just what’s going on, or what will happen.

Let me adjust the scale, so we can see better:

With a bit of focus, we can see e-book sales steadily growing throughout 2009, with a definite spike after the 2009 holiday season: ebook sales suddenly doubled, and seem to have reached a new plateau just shy of $30 Million monthly. Great for e-books.

Ah, yes, but what changed from January of 2009 to January of 2010? Was it something that Amazon did, or was it the entry of Barnes & Noble into the e-book market, and the introduction of Apple’s iPad?

I invite you to draw your own conclusions, but I’d put forward that no matter what Amazon’s strength in the e-book market, they are still just a marginal retail player, and folks hadn’t even heard about e-books until Steve Jobs did an iPad demonstration and all of a sudden it was on every local-tv-broadcast-news telecast (you know, 1950s technology) coast to coast.

Amazon certainly benefits from the buzz currently surrounding e-books, but they didn’t generate it.

##

In my last post I tried to figure out just what share Amazon had of the book business; I estimated they currently hold $2 billion (plus or minus $200 million) — that’s about 15% of the trade book business [somewhere between 12 and 18% – you can quote 20% if you really feel like but it it’s much likely to be less] but less than 10% of the total book business when textbooks are included.

If we hold to the best guess, $2 billion (& 15% of trade) then a safer estimate of Amazon’s actual total book share is 8%

That’s… actually pretty darn good. One of the throwaway statistics I generated in that last post is that Game Stop, acknowledged market leader in it’s segment, only sells 7% of all new games (of course, they make gobs of cash off of systems and a billion plus annually on used games, but that wasn’t the calculation I ran).

For comparison: for the fiscal year ending May 1, 2010 [pdf] Barnes & Noble reported retail sales (Stores + BN.com) of $4.974 billion, with an added kicker of $800 million in sales through their college stores.

B&N sells more than books. There are CDs, DVDs, magazines, board games, stationary, gifts, greeting cards… but if all of that adds up to more than a billion dollars I’d be surprised. Even if 40% of B&N’s business were non-book, they’d still be selling close to 3 billion dollars worth of books each year.

Just like I had to make a guess at Amazon’s share of the book business ($2 billion out of $5.964 billion in “media” sales) I’ll take a stab at B&N: I’m going to say $4 billion of that $4.974 billion of “retail” is books and I’m going to leave their college segment out of it.

In fact my best guess is 3.5-3.75 billion dollars, but once again, that’s without the text books: $4 billion is a nice round number and is as “accurate” as my Amazon estimate.

If you like my math and (informed) assumptions, then you might be excused for thinking B&N handles 25% of the trade book business and 16-17% of all book retail. This seems to match other estimates which should make me a smug bastard but all the guess work and really big numbers and potential errors of, I don’t know, a billion dollars either way make me less confident.

##

Let’s go back to e-books. Here’s the e-book numbers on their own, without the massive rest of the industry pressing down on top of it:

Here the growth trend is much more pronounced.

Growth is the key word. Yes, the book business is huge, billions, but it’s also largely static. I posted charts showing five years of sales and there’s a nice, repeating seasonal pattern. Reliable. While no one knows which books are going to sell, the industry as a whole is going to sell some books.

But none of the other book categories is growing.

I need at least another 6 months of data to see where e-book sales are trending; my guess is it’ll hover around $30 million a month for the rest of the year, and then after Holidays 2010 (and a whole new batch of e-readers given as gifts) we’ll see e-books climb to the next plateau. E-books will do $360 million this year, fairly easy. Will it be $500 million in 2011? Will e-books continue to cannibalize sales of mass-market paperbacks? Will it affect other paperbacks and hardcovers as well?

Is the growth of e-books also growth for books? Or are we just shifting beans around to different columns without changing the book & publishing total?

In a separate post, I’ll go into my opinions on why e-books are hitting the mass market paperbacks first.

Dissecting Amazon

filed under , 5 September 2010, 20:12 by

Amazon is so damn annoying.

Oh, it’s not that they’re a competitor and want to put both me and book publishers out of business so they can sell crappy books cheaply as some sort of book monopoly (though that sucks, too) — no, it’s the half-assed reporting of their financials.

Here, go to their annual report [pdf] and skip all that introductory crap that makes them sound good, go down to page 25: there they list a summary

Net Sales – North America: $12,828 – International: $11,681
Consolidated: $24,509
(in millions)

…and that’s it. Oh, but there are more tables and numbers to go, obviously we just need to read down a bit… ah, here it is on page 28, “Supplimental information about our net sales is as follows:”

Net Sales – North America
Media: $5,964
Electronics and other general merchandise: $6,314
Other (1): $550

Total North America: $12,828

Numbers still in millions, and that footnote (1) reads “Includes non-retail activities, such as marketing and promotional activities, Amazon Web Services, other seller sites, and our co-branded credit card agreements.” That’s worth noting, in fact, as it would seem amazon makes a half billion off of ‘non-retail’ — I wonder how much of that is from ad revenue off of the ads that cover each and every Amazon page — sheesh, I know they’re in it for the money but it went way past tacky two years ago…

Anyway, their whole retail operation, close to 12.3 Billion Dollars, is summed up by those two categories: Media, and not-Media.

Real helpful, guys.

##

All I’m interested in is Books, so I’m going to have to independently re-create a media number and then work backwards to figure out just what Amazon is selling.

Sounds easy, right?

My go-to source for numbers on publishing is The Association of American Publishers, a trade group that among other things, puts out monthly sales numbers broken into a dozen different categories and posts the figures to their web site.

That’s what I’m talking about. For 2009, they reported sales of $23.9 billion.

That’s an awfully big number, and it includes things like college textbooks, $4.3 billion all by itself. El-hi (a book publishing category that encompases the other big text book market, grades k-12 — elementary to high school, hence the abbreviation) is even bigger, $5.2 billion. For a back-of-the-envelope calculation, I’m going to take those out. Call it an adjusted trade book total: $14.4 billion.

So what else is “media”? Well, there are CDs and Music, DVDs, and video games.

For music, I found this release [pdf] with the year end 2009 Neilsen MusicScan statistics in it — though it lists units sold for 2009, not dollars. That’s OK. I figure 99¢ a track on downloads and $10 an album and with the barest gloss of extra math: that’s music media sales in 2009 of roughly $4.9 billion.

Not bad for an industry that’s going out of business, and that doesn’t include concert ticket sales, music licensing, prestige vinyl, or international sales. Just a ballpark number.

For DVDs, I found the Digital Entertainment Group, another trade association. Their members include just about every manufacturer and distributor of both DVDs and Blu-ray, and while they have an annoying flash site that doesn’t allow me to link direct to their numbers, they also have some pretty good numbers on the industry (including some yummy historical data going back 11 years, so you can watch VHS die all over again!)

The DEG figure for DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Downloads is $20 billion. Down a bit, actually, from 2008 — it’s a lot closer to the 2003 total — but hey, we all knew sales were down. Unfortunately, this also includes money made off of rentals, so we’re going to have to back down a bit from the ‘headline’ number. DEG’s report cites Rentrak Corporation’s estimate for rentals in 2009: $6.5 billion. That puts DVD & Blu-ray retail sales at a still healthy $13.5 billion.

The final chunk of media is video games. Here’s an msnbc.com link posting the Associated Press article that quotes numbers from research firm NPD Group for 2008 — not as handy, as I need 2009 numbers, but it gave me the breadcrumbs I needed to find this press release from NPD Group itself, which not only has the total number (including hardware), it breaks it down a bit further into just what I need: Game software sales for PCs, portables, and consoles at $10.5 billion.

So “media” as Amazon reports it had total sales in 2009 of, well, let’s all do the math together:

(numbers in billions)
Books: $14.4
Music: $4.9
DVD/Blu-ray: $13.5
Games: $10.5

Total: $43.4

That’s U.S. only, but is made up of industry-wide estimates for each category. $43.4 billion.

Amazon, out of their big $25 billion gross sales number, only does $5.964 billion in US Media sales. About 13% of the total. Nothing to sneeze at, but not much to crow about either (else Amazon would have already done so: they’re secretive about some things —but not shy)

##

So, what else can I do with this shiny new “retail media sales” estimate?

Well, books may be old fashioned but they are still a third of the retail media market. Music is 11% (about a ninth), DVD/Blu-ray at 31% (close enough to also call a third), and Video Games are 24% of the total.

We could also have some fun doing different types of analysis (Game Stop, for example, sold $795 million in new games in 2009, so even a solid “market leader” in a category only manages 7% or so of the total business) but my focus today is on Amazon, and books.

Let’s assume that sales on Amazon are proportional to overall sales: that is to say, of the $5.964 billion in “media”, a third is books, a third is DVD/Blu-ray, a ninth is music (CDs and downloads) and the rest is video game software.

Look at your own purchasing history — from Amazon in fact, if you’ve bought anything from them this past year — and also remember the figures above are all dollars, not units:

  • a handful of books, at $12 or less?
  • a TV series box set (or two), at $20 or more?
  • two or three albums, when they advertise those $5 downloads?
  • any games? maybe so, if it was discounted enough, and you didn’t just go to Wal-Mart when they had it on sale.

It’s nearly impossible to say — which is kind of why I wish Amazon broke it out in their own reporting of financials — but in the absence of real data, I’m going with my best guess and this assumption:

Amazon is so big, I’d be more surprised if their sales didn’t mirror the overall retail market as a whole, particularly in sales of books and discs: easily shippable but occasionally hard to find physical media. It’s what they built their core business on, a decade ago.

As a number of industries turn digital, well, so is Amazon. I’m not sure if it’s enough to move the needle one way or another. So what if I end up being off by half-a-billion dollars or so? It’s not like anyone else is posting numbers.

##

Taking a leap in the dark, I think we divide up Amazon’s media sales proportional to the overall retail media market:

(in millions)
Books: $1,978
Music: $673
DVD/Blu-ray: $1,855
Video Games: $1,442

…but that video game number just looks wrong. Maybe with hardware added in, maybe, but the media calculations above specifically excluded hardware.

Gah! I hate Amazon!

Let’s say Amazon sells just as many games as they sell music? I’m on my third assumption, now:

(in millions)
Books: $2370
Music: $670
DVD/Blu-ray: $2240
Video Games: $670

I think the best we could manage is a range: Out of close to 6 billion in “media” sales Amazon earns between 1.8 and 2.5 billion dollars from sales of books, and about the same amount off of DVD & Blu-ray.

To make the math easier for my next post, I’m going with an even $2 billion.

Yotsuba & Charlie, Yotsuba & Calvin, Yotsuba & Bugs, Yotsuba & South Park, Yotsuba & Harry, Yotsuba & Parents.

filed under , 4 September 2010, 17:22 by

I’m going to recycle a point I made in a previous column; I only bring up the fact that I posted this previously as I’m about to quote myself verbatim:

Let’s pull a western reference just for kicks: Peanuts. Schultz. As much a part of the Western Canon as anything else I might choose to cite. These ‘kids’ all talk like adults — not in a South Park way, that’s not what I’m saying…
Look, compare Peanuts to Calvin & Hobbes: Calvin is a kid, acts like a kid, thinks and reasons like a kid, daydreams and imagines things fantastically like a kid, and Waterson is a Genius. I simultaneously salute him for abandoning Calvin as a complete conceptual work that couldn’t go further, while lamenting that I can’t read daily new adventures in Calvin’s universe. Waterson drew kids.
— Schultz drew Schultz: good ol’ Charlie Brown is a stand-in, an everyman who comments on the human condition. Peanuts may have been as revolutionary and as on point as Calvin & Hobbes during it’s first decade too (that’s what makes the Fantagraphics collections such a joy and treasure) but Shultz didn’t stop. He should be admired for putting out daily strips over a lifetime, but a lifetime of reflection means it’s about much more than just the adventures of a gang of likeable kids.
but I’ve drifted off point. Charlie Brown is drawn like a kid, but is he?
Unless one counts wah-wah trombone voice-over as meaningful to any degree, they operate in their own sealed universe, talking and reacting like little adults — and when they do act like kids, they tend to be ridiculed by the other characters. (Linus, blanket, et. al.)
No one looks at Peanuts and says, “Hey, these kids are unrealistic!” Hell, can anyone tell me how old Charlie Brown and the gang are supposed to be? No age is ever given, to my recollection. It’s an amorphous age between 8 and what? 18, 16, 13? 80?.

Good Ol’ Charlie Schultz Brown could say and do things, even controversial things, no adult could get away with because the Peanuts gang was ‘just kids’. Peanuts, as a syndicated comic strip that ran in most newspapers for 50 years not only had to appeal to diverse audiences, it had to watch some of those audiences grow up, and perhaps grow out of reading comics – perhaps this is why Peanuts went from slightly-subversive commentary to an increasing focus on the dog (and marketing the dog: t-shirts, lunchboxes, school supplies, plush) until the whole just became a series of running gags punctuated by whatever the dog was doing, which also consisted of a series of running gags.

##

Calvin & Hobbes had a much shorter time to impact readers, but if you were of age during it’s run (1985-95) you likely not only harbor fond memories of the strips, I do not doubt that Waterson has coloured your personal philosophy.

Quite a bit of the humor in Calvin & Hobbes is over the heads of the ‘intended’ audience; I remember Calvin’s Dad getting some of the best punchlines (particularly when he flat-out lies to Calvin) and Hobbes, if he is in fact not just a figment, seems much more worldly than his constant companion. (IF Hobbes is just a aspect of Calvin’s imagination, we have a much longer essay/analysis on our hands)

##

Bugs Bunny et al., the whole cast of Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies are now (after decades of sanitizing and editing) considered beloved children’s characters and as innocent a thing to give to even the youngest child as any Disney DVD. I, and many others, remember a different Bugs Bunny, the one that cross-dresses, among other things. I remember Warner Bros. characters who drank and smoked, a Daffy Duck who drank gasoline and nitroglycerin before swallowing a lit match, a whole lot of guns and bombs, and even Nazis.

Cartoons were popular entertainment for most of the 20th Century, but it was only late in that century that animation became suitable ‘childrens fare’. [and the production values went into the toilet, too, but that’s a different rant]

Animation, from its earliest inception (1919) right up until Fantasia (1940) — or even Heavy Metal (1981) (and Canadian) was more than just “kids stuff” – it was an art form and a lot of the jokes were ‘adult’ (though perhaps not as adult as Heavy Metal) and while we wink-and-nod at a lot of it now (the black streotypes present in early Tom & Jerry, the fact that both Elmer and Yosemite Sam are always armed and more than willing to fire) we don’t think twice about ‘kids’ watching ‘cartoons’

You’ll note that Fantasia (Disney!) featured cartoon nudity (topless mythological figures) in a celebration of Bacchus (god of wine!) and yet no one seems to care! I doubt kids are watching Fantasia, however, not because parents censor the movie but because it features classical music and no one can be bothered to protest. Let alone has seen it. More’s the pity.

##

South Park is the latest animated property that features kid characters, but most obviously is not for kids — much like Simpsons or Family Guy in fact. Kids really shouldn’t be watching any of these (no, not even Simpsons) and only the fact that it is animated, and comedic, gives anyone under 14 the ‘excuse’ they need.

Granted, these can all be really good, really funny shows. I know why the kids want to watch ‘em. The question is whether they should.

Here, perform a little experiment: the day after South Park airs, go to a 6th grade class, and ask the boys what they thought of the most recent episode.

Odds are very good nearly all will have seen it, and thought it was hillarious.

TV-MA means nothing. Parental Supervision? Heh, do you live in the same United States I do? So long as the kids are inside and not getting into trouble – let ‘em watch or play whatever. It’s just a cartoon. It’s just a video game. They seem to like it…

##

As Many Other Columnists Have Noted Yotsuba&!, at least in the original, wasn’t necessarily a comic for kids. Peanuts wasn’t necessarily a comic for kids, Calvin & Hobbes has a lot of appeal to readers of all ages, but it wasn’t just a comic for kids, and Bugs & Co. most decidedly weren’t really for kids until a lot of time passed (and the archives were edited).

So let’s look at what Yotsuba&! is: a five-year-old girl discovers her world in a way that reflects both her own ignorance/innocence, with knowing winks to an adult audience, while also remaining appealing to fans of all ages.

Doesn’t seem that far off from Peanuts, which I’ll remind you ran 50 years in syndication in newspapers, or Calvin & Hobbes — or Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wiley Coyote, or numerous other ‘kids’ characters — or Grimm’s (un-disney-fied) fairy tales, or greek myth, or classics like Treasure Island, Huck Finn, Edgar Allen Poe: yes, there are editions of Poe, unedited, aimed at kids.

Kids are marvellously adaptable; they’ll read what they like, and if we present them with stories filled with magic, action, adventure, wonder, likeable & relateable characters, then they’ll read them, and love them. They’ll ignore bits that seem irrevelant (romance) (at least until they’re older) and can put up with quite a bit of scary so long as the young heroes in the story can overcome it, too.

Harry Potter isn’t really suitable for an 11 year old (at least not when we get to book seven) but that doesn’t stop young fans from reading every last page of every last book, and loving it.

##

And so:

Yotsuba&!

Yotsuba is a girl who has “adventures” in the world’s safest, least objectionable wilderness: suburban Japan.

So maybe Yotsuba wasn’t intended for a kid audience. Maybe it’s not the story of a 5-year old, but more about what it’s like to raise a 5-year old

The original audience and intention don’t preclude other ways to appreciate a work. And so much as Bugs Bunny and Bart Simpson lunch boxes now feature prominently in elementary school cafeterias, there is nothing about Yotsuba’s origins that necessarily should limit Yotsuba’s appeal.

All these titles scoring [0.0] at the end of the chart only appeared once, and way down on the regular manga rankings, and so the weighted score (when rounded to a single decimal) seemingly disappears — but it is more than zero, if only just.

What I find interesting is the ghost of World Embryo [wiki], the most recent manga from Daisuke Moriyama (Chrono Crusade) announced as a Dark Horse license in 2008. Past that announcement — and an isbn 9781595823335 — and of course a number of people trying to order it online, which is the only reason I know about it — I have no additional information. So far as I know, this book has never shipped, though it must have progressed fairly far in pre-publication given the number of sites that list it.

Dear Dark Horse: unless a loss of license or some similar back-room business is keeping this book from coming out, you’re losing money. It’s one of your top 20 manga selling online, and it doesn’t even exist yet.

Even a cursory glance at this seemingly random listing shows old favorites (Berserk, Oh My Goddess!) are still selling well as the new volumes ever-so-slowly come out, the new Neon Genesis Evangelion titles are doing fairly well, and the new CLAMP releases (and re-releases) are generating some interest as well.

— I’ll post the full list, by date, below. I’ll point out that the numeric rankings above are Dark-Horse-specific (and draw from 10 weeks of data) while the places ranked in the list below are how each volume performed against all manga, and only for the date listed.

Before I post the eye-glazing list, I’ll give you my analysis. Well, call them observations instead:

  • note that all but three volumes of Berserk are ranking — not every volume every week, but vols 1-3 place each and every week posted, so not only are the new volumes selling, additional fans are buying in at the beginning.
  • the same can be said of Hellsing, only more so.
  • and also of Lone Wolf & Cub, but in this case the early volumes seem to be outselling the later ones: yes, there are more fans picking up this series each and every year. I don’t know if they burn out, or turn to a bookstore/comic shop to finish up, as the middle volumes aren’t selling nearly as well online, and the last volumes place way down on my rankings.
  • and as a final example of this trend, Vampire Hunter D: 15 novels and counting. Novels mind you, which should be less interesting (in some ways) than the comics. I’m not sure if D fans even know there is a manga adaptation (published in the US by DMP).
  • The Clover and Chobits omnibuses are performing quite well, considering older editions of the books (from Tokyopop) have been out for years already.
  • Fans are still buying Ghost in the Shell and Akira, even though Dark Horse lost those licenses – I’ll put forward two theories: 1st, that fans who like the books are are buying the ‘next’ volume not realizing there are two different publishers, or 2nd, that perfectionists don’t like the Kodansha-published versions and are buying whatever Dark Horse stock they can get their hands on. Both may in fact be happening.

MMF Appetizer: Three for Kids.

[Here’s a digest of reviews, re-posted mostly verbatim, previously written for and posted on Comicsnob.com (Dec ’06-May ’08, now defunct) – the first three were originally posted 5 May 2007; the follow-up review for Kilala Princess vol. 2 was posted 16 June 2007]

##

Warriors, vol. 1, Dragon Drive, vol. 1, & Disney’s Kilala Princess, vols. 1 & 2

Now, we all know that I have a decided preference for properties aimed at a more adult audience — or at least, those items wrapped in plastic so the kiddies can’t (supposedly) get into them — but since I like comics, I try to read a little bit of everything… particularly when I can get a free copy of something.

Some of my own readers (I know for a fact) are parents — and while they stop by this blog for their own edification and weren’t expecting these recommendations — I just so happen to have a small stack of “all ages” stuff handy so let’s surprise the readership and review a few manga for the shorter set.

Premise: You always knew your housecat resented you; let’s look at why.

Synopsis:

The forest is being clearcut and bulldozed to make way for even more suburban housing. This displaces some of the resident feral cats, including Greystripe and other cats of the Thunderclan. (Wild cats have a hierarchical and feudal society; didn’t you know that?) In a “humane” gesture, the contractor clearing the forest hires some animal control types to capture the strays, presumably to give them homes.

This doesn’t sit too well with the cats, however. The feral cats — proud members of a clan and warriors true — do not consider themselves to be an infestation problem and so fight back. One of their number, Greystripe, bravely rescues many of his comrades, but gets trapped in the animal control van in the process.

Some weeks later, he has been placed with a family, in his terms now just a “kittypet,” and merely a shadow of the noble wild warrior that he was. Will the stifling care of the “twolegs” reduce Greystripe with the beckoning call of its free food and warm, dry, and wanton ways — or will he break out of his comfy prison to once again become a proud and self-reliant cat?

Review:

Now, if I want a cat-manga fix, I’ll likely re-read Azumanga Daioh, or something with catgirls in it, but the recent bestseller lists are telling us that either there is an untapped market for cat comics, or perhaps that the books of Erin Hunter have an enthusiastic and motivated fanbase.

The story is just getting established in this first volume, but already our noble hero has been pulled from his home and begins to hear the first Call to Adventure. I could get even more Campbellian on this, but the epic quest is I think secondary to the “aw cute” factor. Cats being cats has an appeal that goes beyond story fundamentals and myth, particularly if one loves and owns the critters. Of note as well is how artist Barry manages to differentiate his characters, since they’re all cats you know.

Me, I can’t stand having a cat around. I prefer to be the laziest, most arrogant thing in my house, thank you, and I don’t need the competition. (oddly, cats love me — especially as a place to sleep; just part of the other furniture, you know.)

Much like Inubaka is the prefect thing for dog lovers, here we have something for cat people, or perhaps for those unduly enamoured of Hunter’s novels. Not having read Hunter’s originals, I’m not too impressed but will give the book 3 marks, judged on it’s own merits as a decent character- and story-intro and overall solid first outing. (As an extra after the manga, the publishers give us a 6 page excerpt from the first Warriors novel, and 4 pages from the most recent — out of the kindness of their hearts, I’m sure)

Premise: There’s a new game in town! Oh. yeah, I guess you’ve heard that bit before.

Synopsis:

Our hero Reiji Ozora is a generic-issue loser, never able to succeed at anything, or even stick with it for long. Though when he is introduced to the new Dragon Drive game by childhood friend Maiko, he finds something that not only engages his interest, but for which he may have an aptitude.

The wildcard is his new dragon, assigned to him for the game supposedly based on his own skills and abilities: while the dragon “Chibi” (as Reiji names the poor runt) doesn’t seem like much, in match after match Chibi manages to surprise everyone, even the creators of the game…

Review:

DD cannibalises quite a few bits and pieces of other titles: It’s a computer game, but you get cards for game elements. You play in virtual reality, but you have to train your dragon to get it to level up. The owner and fighter have to be in sync, and the control depends on mental effort…

Yes, this is in fact a re-hash of every other proxy fighter released for the past 9 years. So far, it manages to succeed despite that, though I think our manga-ka, Saken-sensei, owes a vast unacknowledged debt to CLAMP’s Angelic Layer, which Dragon Drive most closely resembles. (Angelic Layer is an excellent anime, which I recommend —a personal favourite of mine, in fact— but only a so-so manga title which is fine for fans of CLAMP or the show but not worth seeking out otherwise.)

This is a fine title to give to young fans who have already “caught them all” or collected all the super-rare whatever-eyed-whatever-coloured dragons of Yugi’s. It’s more of the same, but different, and that’s all a lot of fans are looking for.

Premise: Young girl with an over-developed imagination and princess-fixation gets to put her Disney trivia to use, in an effort to save her best friend.

Synopsis:

Kilala and her best friend Erika attend a school with an odd tradition: each year there is a princess contest (…seems like a beauty pageant to me) where a prime example of young-girlhood gets chosen as princess, and awarded the school’s tiara. We can’t be sure what else the honour entails because soon after winning, Erika gets kidnapped. Oh… that should be “kidnapped, exclamation point. [!]”

Kilala has recently made the acquaintance of two handsome young men: the likeable but slightly abrasive Rei, and the slightly older, less likeable Valdou. It seems these two are on a quest, to find the princess who can save their alternate realm. In an odd twist, it may be that Erika, winner of the trifling pageant, was in fact the princess they sought. Now Kilala and Rei (and Valdou too, I guess) must embark on a mission to rescue Erika, and find the fabled Seventh Princess. exclamation point, !

Review:

The best thing I can say about this title is that it would have been a much better manga without the cumbersome Disney tie-in. I can see how writer Tanaka is going to use the Disney properties to good effect, even with just the hints dropped in this first, slim volume (and given the setup and pacing, they’re aiming for at least a dozen of these) [edit: though only 4 ever came out in English] but while I like Rei and Kilala and the supporting cast (so far) I don’t know that I necessarily needed to see Disney’s Snow White brought back as a character in any form, let alone as one merely there to provide a little colour to someone else’s story.

I think later Disney princesses (Belle, Ariel, and Jasmine) will translate better, while the classics (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella) aren’t going to do so well with the manga treatment. I’ll give artist Kodaka some praise: the art almost works; the transitions from original to borrowed art are OK and not as jarring as one might expect, but there is still a disconnect — These differences might be mitigated as the story progresses to newer Disney titles but certainly not the one that dates to 1939 …but here we are.

No doubt, I wouldn’t have read this at all if a promo copy (through my bookstore, not sent to me personally) weren’t available, but I find Kilala and Rei likeable enough characters, and might even be tempted to buy a few more of these (depending on the story).

And honestly, that should be praise enough. If I’m tempted, then the Princess fans at your house will eat these up wholesale, with or without sugar. You might even wait a few months (or a year) so that more of Kilala is available, before giving this crack-like substance to the young Disney otaku in your home.

Disney’s Kilala Princess, vol. 2

Published by: Tokyopop
Writer: Rika Tanaka
Artist: Nao Kodaka

96 (84) pages.
Vintage: May 2007
English Adaptation: Kathy Schilling
Retouch & Lettering: Star Print Brokers
Production Artist: Courtney Geter
Cover Design: Monalisa De Asis
Editor: Hope Donovan
Publisher’s Rating: Ages 8-12

Rating: still 3 out of 5

What’s up:

With the help of the Seven Dwarves (yes, those seven) and Snow White (yes, that Snow White) Kilala and Rei manage to defeat the Evil Queen, acquire the means to find Kilala’s kidnapped friend Erika, and rush back to the “real” world to save her before it’s too late. And so begins the second half of the book…

The Disney tie-in is a fine gimmick, for what it is (i.e. cheap ploy to sell books) but the new characters that Tanaka created are what drew me into the story, at least far enough to spend six bucks on the second volume. The plot gets surprisingly complex before we end volume two on a bit of a cliffhanger. I expected the chaste, sweet romance — but here it is as a plot point, not just an eventual goal for our young heroine. In other books she might have pined away in silence for volumes, eventually getting closer to her beau, and not confessed until the final chapter. As it turns out, the pair may be split apart and there is only one night (and a dance, naturally) for the two to share.

Of course, to find out what happens after the dance, and why it was so easy to find Erika, the lost friend, after the flashy kidnapping in volume one, we all get to wait four months for the third installment.

I have to wonder if the the writer and artist had the idea first, and then had to sell it to Kodansha, who then had to pitch it to Disney. I suppose it’s much more likely that Tokyo Mickey had the idea, and then went looking for the manga-ka to make a cheap knock-off in the ol’ Princess line, but there is a surprising amount of heart here.

Kilala is a fairy tale by-the-numbers, nothing really original, but even a plain tale will be a pleasure, if it is a plain tale well told.

##

Postscript:

Since these reviews were written (two years ago, I’ll remind you) Dragon Drive was finished (at 14 volumes), Warriors continues to be published (10 volumes and counting), and Kilala Princess was abandoned by Tokyopop after 4 chapter books (corresponding to only the first 2 of 5 Japanese tankobon) — I don’t know what the licensing fees were like but given Kodansha’s current relationship with Tokyopop I think we can write off Kilala as a nice trifle but unlikely to see completion.

Though if the [relatively new] Kodansha USA were looking for recommendations on what to publish: Disney’s Kilala Princess is just sitting there, waiting, and quite likely to make money. Maybe quite a bit of money, if marketed correctly.

Yes, all the links are broken.

On June 1, 2015 (after 6 years and 11 months) I needed to relaunch/restart this blog, or at least rekindle my interest in maintaining and updating it.

Rather than delete and discard the whole thing, I instead moved the blog -- database, cms, files, archives, and all -- to this subdomain. When you encounter broken links (and you will encounter broken links) just change the URL in the address bar from www.rocketbomber.com to archive.rocketbomber.com.

I know this is inconvenient, and for that I apologise. In addition to breaking tens of thousands of links, this also adversely affects the blog visibility on search engines -- but that, I'm willing to live with. Between the Wayback Machine at Archive.org and my own half-hearted preservation efforts (which you are currently reading) I feel nothing has been lost, though you may have to dig a bit harder for it.

As always, thank you for reading. Writing version 1.0 of Rocket Bomber was a blast. For those that would like to follow me on the 2.0 - I'll see you back on the main site.
