Just sayin'

If tomorrow’s ‘mystery’ announcement doesn’t have the word ‘mirasol’ in it, I think I’ll have to seriously rethink my current employment.

…and that’s about all I can say on the matter.

Comment

  1. Agreed.

  2. Coming back to your post ‘dissecting Amazon’, I don’t understand why at http://www.fonerbooks.com/booksale.htm
Amazon is credited with the largest market share? Is it because he uses book sales from the US Census Bureau, and why do these differ so much from the Association of American Publishers?

    Love your site!!
PS from the above site: ‘I haven’t tried doing the math, but it’s entirely possible that Amazon, as a store selling new products, runs in the red, and the whole operation is subsidized by their verision of eBay.’

  3. The announcement did not have the name “mirasol” in it, but the product has “mirasol stalking horse” written all over it.

I said before, whether or not Mirasol is ready, a truly finger-touch back touchscreen is not ready for prime time. Neither, for that matter, is a truly clear, glare-free front touchscreen. Either of those would give a Mirasol equipped device the touchscreen required by the market.

And at the same time, B&N needs to be in a bigger software ecosystem for that, since a big market advantage of mirasol over e-Ink is in support for a range of both true e-Reader and slate computing applications. That means Android, but more specifically means Android 3.x, which is also not ready for prime time.

So introduce an LCD device with a switchable backlight and sufficiently high resolution that its OK as a sometime ebook reader, sometime other stuff. Keep the existing e-Ink Nook for those who want a device optimized for eBooks and if it can do other stuff, fine.

Then for Christmas 2011, introduce the “Revolutionary” ColorNook2 with Mirasol and a non-interfering touchscreen at this ColorNook1 price point, slide the ColorNook1 down to the new Kindle price point, and open both up to Android 3.x. Don’t know the specs of the ColorNook1, so it might require a processor upgrade, but the difference between the $180 and $250 device is the display, the better eBook capabilities and the long battery life it provides.

Yes, all the links are broken.

On June 1, 2015 (after 6 years and 11 months) I needed to relaunch/restart this blog, or at least rekindle my interest in maintaining and updating it.

Rather than delete and discard the whole thing, I instead moved the blog -- database, cms, files, archives, and all -- to this subdomain. When you encounter broken links (and you will encounter broken links) just change the URL in the address bar from www.rocketbomber.com to archive.rocketbomber.com.

I know this is inconvenient, and for that I apologise. In addition to breaking tens of thousands of links, this also adversely affects the blog visibility on search engines -- but that, I'm willing to live with. Between the Wayback Machine at Archive.org and my own half-hearted preservation efforts (which you are currently reading) I feel nothing has been lost, though you may have to dig a bit harder for it.

As always, thank you for reading. Writing version 1.0 of Rocket Bomber was a blast. For those that would like to follow me on the 2.0 - I'll see you back on the main site.
